History

Celebrating 100 years of serving the community

Formed on the 26th March, 1912, PYBC is the oldest club in the Borough still in existence today. Founder Mr V.J. Andrew was assisted by secretary/treasurer Selwyn Hamlin and membership was One Shilling. The club’s first race was held on the 30th March, 1912 on Panmure Lagoon. Six boats competed and Mr C. Kay’s “Sweet Nell” took line honours. The race venue moved to a new course on the river from the wharf to Point England and back. The club also provided a social venue for the local area with dances and the club picnic being very popular. The first club house was erected close to the present site in 1915. War, the depression and a fire took its toll on the club but with the help of the firm of Wilson and Rothery, a new club house was built in 1935.

The club boomed until the Second World War. Membership declined and racing dropped off in the early fifties. Fortunately, the Panmure and Tamaki district became a popular residential area and people began buying boats and racing again. Work was carried out to reclaim the foreshore and build a private wharf. From the first Suva race in 1956, the PYBC has had representatives as crew or boats in every ocean race which has left Auckland or Whangarei up to and including the 1977 Suva and Lautoka races. The present club house was opened in 1977, providing much needed storage space and room for the club’s social functions.

In recent years, the club has continued to flourish due to the effort of its hard working members and sponsors. Hosting the Quarter -Ton Cup in 1980 with yachts from all over the world was a highlight of this era. In 1986, a new winching system was installed for hauling out boats. This was immediately followed by a new slipway and quick haul system, together with a new sealed and concreted yard and by mid 1989 the yard facility was completed with the addition of the new jetty.

Over 400 members currently enjoy the benefits of the club’s long and successful history.
